About DigiWaves

DigiWaves supports the digital transformation of European fisheries

DigiWaves addresses the needs and challenges of small-scale fisheries (SSF), long-distance fisheries (LDF), and recreational fisheries (RF). Building on SmartFish, EveryFish, and OptiFish, the DigiWaves project develops and demonstrates practical and scalable solutions for these diverse fisheries contexts.

Our Vision

A future where small-scale, long-distance, and recreational fisheries are fully integrated into a transparent, efficient, trusted, and data-driven European fisheries management system.

Our Objectives

Develop new approaches that improve existing data collection programs, enhance the processing of monitoring data and reduce overall MCS costs.

Assess and improve the digital readiness of SSF, LDF, and RF.

Standardise and harmonise existing data standards, governance frameworks, and projects with technologies for automatic catch registration.

Develop a secure, scalable, and interoperable data infrastructure that supports real-time and cost-efficient collection, integration, and analysis of fisheries-dependent data.

Case Studies

Small-scale fisheries (SSF)

Small-scale vessels are the least covered by digital monitoring, as existing systems are costly and hard to fit on small boats. DigiWaves deploys compact electronic monitoring, vessel tracking and catch-reporting tools on working vessels in Iberia, the UK, Norway, Denmark, Greece and La Réunion.

Long-distance fisheries (LDF)

Long-distance fleets operate far from port authorities, making catch verification difficult and costly. DigiWaves deploys remote electronic monitoring and near real-time tracking on tuna purse seiners in the Indian Ocean and on vessels in the Falkland Islands.

Recreational fisheries (RF)
Recreational catches are largely missing from official fisheries statistics. DigiWaves works with anglers through mobile apps that use AI to identify fish species and estimate their size from photos, feeding reliable data into stock assessment.

Solutions

13 digital technologies

Across four clusters
supporting fisheries monitoring, electronic reporting, vessel tracking, and data collection.

Onboard electronic monitoring

cameras and onboard AI that record and classify catch as it comes aboard

Vessel monitoring and tracking

systems that
show where vessels are and when they are fishing

Catch reporting and data collection

tools that
let fishers and anglers report catch simply and reliably

A 3D synthetic data pipeline

underpinning them all, that generates training images for the AI, removing the need for
thousands of hand-labelled photos.
